In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for The Boogeyman, Thatcher compared her character Sadie with her Yellowjackets character Natalie. She broke down how they handle turmoil differently and explained that Natalie’s arc is still playing out while Sadie’s ends in the movie. Check out Thatcher’s full quote below:

Sophie Thatcher: I feel like they just deal with their turmoil in different ways. Very different ways. I think Natalie’s very outwards with it and very confrontational, but they both kind of internalize their turmoil and they internalize their sadness. But Natalie is just more aggressive. And I think Sadie just takes it much more inwards. And that’s what’s so satisfying about her hero’s journey. She’s forced out of it. And I think because [Yellowjackets is] in TV show format, we have more time to show [Natalie’s] arc and we’re still going through it.

How Natalie’s Trauma Impacts Her Moving Forward In Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets opens with the surviving teens hunting, killing, and eating one of their own in the dead of winter in the wilderness as part of a ritual. This first scene shows how bleak it got and how far the girls had removed their morals from societal norms. When the future version of each character was first introduced, it was clear that Natalie was self-medicating with drugs and alcohol to deal with the horrors she and her friends both witnessed and perpetrated in the wilderness.

Yellowjackets season 2 has shown the deterioration of hope, sanity, and morals with the team as winter makes survival more difficult with food scarcity, growing hunger, and the weather becoming more dangerous. In the penultimate episode, Javi dies in Natalie’s place when trying to save her after she is chosen as the first sacrifice. While Natalie initially tries to save him, Misty warns her not to in order to survive, and this single action seems to be the tipping point for her losing the last shred of innocence and morals she relied on.

Natalie is haunted by that guilt throughout her life, knowing that the younger brother of the boy she loves died in her place, and becoming the first person the group actively chooses to eat. On top of that, Lottie declares that the wilderness saved Natalie so she could become the team’s new leader. This added responsibility seems to be what finally breaks Natalie, as the team bows and kisses her hands one by one in tribute. Allowing Javi to die in her place has been a driving force even decades later when she jumps in front of Lisa to save her from Misty and sacrifices her life in the process. While adult Natalie may finally find peace, teenage Natalie will need to step up as a leader for the rest of the team in Yellowjackets season 3.
