The Master Sword is the most sought-after weapon and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom makes no exception to that age-old Zelda rule. Unfortunately, Link begins his journey here with the Master Sword, but it quickly breaks and then is lost entirely. However, fear not, as Link is able to retrieve it again, intact, from the head of a dragon.

Unlike Zelda: Breath of the Wild where the Sword was in the Korok Forest, the Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword location takes advantage of the sky-level terrain as it is on a dragon that happens to be soaring through the sky, meaning Link will not only need to be ready to get it, but he’ll have to work for it.

Where Is The Master Sword

There are technically two methods to getting the Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword. The official story quest Recovering The Hero’s Sword is the intended way to retrieve the sword, but players who are feeling ambitious can hunt it down without officially starting the quest.

To go the quest route, head to Korok Forest and defeat Phantom Ganon for the Deku Tree. After defeating Phantom Ganon, the Deku Tree will give Link the quest. The biggest benefit of obtaining the sword this way is the Deku Tree is going to mark the location of the Master Sword on the map.

This is when Link will realize the Master Sword is on the move. For those that are looking to grab the sword early, a little more work will be involved. Since the location of the Light Dragon won’t be marked on any map, players will need to hunt it down themselves. Luckily, the Light Dragon can be seen from the ground surface of Tears of the Kingdom so when spotted, use the camera to zoom in and verify it is the correct Dragon, as there are more than one. It will have blue energy radiating from the top of its head, indicating the Master Sword.

How To Get The Master Sword

Despite whichever route players chose to go to locate the Dragon, once found, Link will need to find a way to get on it. The best method is to fast-travel to the tower nearest the Light Dragon and have it launch Link so that he may paraglide down onto the Dragon’s back.

If there is no tower around, head up to Great Sky Island and try to land on it from there. Once on the Dragon, Link can move about freely along its body. The Master Sword is going to be located at the head, but be sure to collect what’s available on the way up. The instruction from here is simple, Link needs to pull the Sword.

After Link pulls the sword, a sequence will start in which the Light Dragon attempts to shake Link off of it. Link will need to have two full stamina rings to pull the Zelda: TOTK Master Sword.

Don’t try to cheat it with Stamina boosting food, it won’t work, Link needs to have earned the Stamina.

Once it seems like Link is at his breaking point, the Dragon will stop and the Master Sword will be pulled from the Light Dragon. A cutscene will follow and then Link will be able to continue on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom journey with the Master Sword at his side.
