In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, black and silver rank monsters are the two highest ranks of common enemies, and among the most daunting non-boss foes Link will come up against during his adventure. Early in a run, coming across a black or silver enemy is highly uncommon; however, after a while, it can seem like they are the only adversaries Link ever encounters. This is because Link actually has a hidden level that increases as the player defeats enemies.

Although a similar phenomenon is experienced in many games, including Tears of the Kingdom‘s predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, until recently, the exact cause of this gameplay mechanic was unclear. Dataminers, however, have uncovered TOTK‘s secret XP and scaling system, which dictates what enemies are spawned around Hyrule. The uncovered info helps shed some light on the reason why, after many hours of gameplay, Link seems to only ever encounter black and silver enemies.

Tears Of The Kingdom Has Hidden XP & A Skill System

As explained by Reddit user Echo_BotW, some Tears of the Kingdom enemies give XP when they die. It is possible that Link can collect, from each enemy, 10 times their base XP provided he satisfies certain hidden objectives – in effect rewarding the player with additional XP for exhibiting skillful combat during the battle. The additional XP Link can gain per enemy cannot exceed the base XP gained from defeating them. Furthermore, when Link kills 10 enemies of the same type, the XP potentially gained is permanently locked up to a maximum level of 10 times XP. This means, that the maximum XP Link can obtain per regular enemy is 20 times XP.

Additional XP can be gained during combat if Link is able to satisfy one of four requirements – perfectly parry an enemy’s attack, perform a perfect dodge, hit an enemy’s weak point, and defeat an enemy without sustaining any damage during the melee. Carrying out one or more of these hidden objectives will result in Link receiving the normal baseline XP for a kill, as well as the bonus XP for the successful completion of the goal. This will result in either double XP for a perfect parry and/or perfect dodge, or an additional 50% extra XP for a flawless victory and/or accurate assault of an enemy’s weak spot.

There are, however, restrictions to this additional XP system. These include the skill XP potentially gained from killing a dungeon boss which is limited to 10% for a perfect parry and/or perfect dodge and 5% for a no-damage received victory and/or accurate targeting of an enemy’s weak spot. Link can only receive XP from a dungeon boss twice, instead of the usual 10, moreover, the dungeon bosses can’t only be battled once.

As with Breath of the Wild, the majority of common enemies scale in line with the level and XP of Link. Each enemy that is capable of scaling has an experience threshold which, when passed by Link, results in every instance of that type of enemy scaling to a higher rank, consequently becoming harder to deal with. The enemy scaling system in Tears of the Kingdom differentiates the rank of an enemy by their color – for example, a Bokoblin will increase from red to blue to black to the strongest version of that monster, silver. Although the colors are the same for every type of enemy, the XP threshold varies.

In Tears of the Kingdom, enemy scaling is undoubtedly done to help balance the mid to late game, as otherwise, enemies would not stand a chance against an increasingly more powerful Link. Likewise, if enemy scaling was not in the game, Link could potentially fall victim to attacks from overly powerful enemies far too early. Therefore, players predominantly encountering black and silver rank enemies will have surpassed the hidden pre-set XP threshold responsible for increasing the rank of an enemy type.

In spite of this, there are many types of enemies in Tears of the Kingdom that are not capable of scaling. These adversaries primarily fall into two categories: enemies that have no rank to scale to, either because they are already the highest rank or as they have no rank at all, and enemies that are set to a specific rank and as a result do not receive any scaling effect. Therefore, although black and silver enemies will eventually become the norm, Link will occasionally come across other common enemies that are unable to rise to the rank of silver.

Beyond enemy scaling, many weapons and horns are also affected by Links XP and level. As was the case in Breath of the Wild, scalable weapons have inbuilt XP thresholds, which signify when it can receive a modifier, and in some cases, when it can evolve into a new weapon. Unlike weapon and enemy scaling, horn scaling was not a part of Breath of the Wild, and is new to The Legend of Zelda franchise; however, they follow an identical scaling principle. Enemy Horns attached to weapons also scale, though independently of the weapon they are attached to, or the enemy they are wielded by.

Although silver enemies are the fiercest foes in Tears of the Kingdom, previous installments in The Legend of Zelda franchise featured an additional rank of enemy difficulty, golden monsters. These seemingly gilded adversaries proved a heightened challenge in Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. It is unclear why golden monsters have been omitted from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, however, it is possible that they could be reintroduced to the world of Hyrule in the future, as part of DLC or an update, to add another tier of difficulty to Link’s already perilous adventure.
