The original Avengers have played a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history thus far, but some have been more intrinsic than others. Capping off the successful Phase 1, Marvel Studios staged its first culminating event with 2012’s The Avengers. It marked the first time that the original Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembles on the big screen after Nick Fury called them for the Avengers Initiative in light of Loki’s attempt to take over New York. Their first venture is a success, leading to several more. From then on, it becomes clear that Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and Captain America would shape the MCU moving forward.
11 years of the Infinity Saga comes to a close in Avengers: Endgame. The Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick marks the end of an era for the MCU as the franchise paid off its overarching narrative that pits Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their allies against Thanos. To fully emphasize its importance in the universe’s history, it also functioned as the swan song for some of the MCU’s founding heroes. With Phase 5 of the Multiverse Saga now in full swing, it’s time to look back and re-examine just how important each original Avenger has been to the MCU.
6 Hawkeye
Statistically, the Avengers lose whenever Clint Barton isn’t on the field. As a skilled spy and one of Fury’s most trusted operatives, the team’s resident bow and arrow-wielding hero knows a lot about devoting himself to a bigger cause. Before his proper debut in The Avengers, was first in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor film. Known to be a fully devoted family man, Barton’s family has been a big factor in many of his arcs in the MCU over the years. Despite his incredible skills, however, Hawkeye hasn’t had the same impact as his fellow Avengers in the bigger franchise. Perhaps Marvel Studios can make up for that moving forward.
5 Thor
There is no doubt that Thor is one of, if not the most powerful heroes in the MCU. One too many times, Thor’s sheer strength saved his allies from total doom. Case in point is his epic entrance into Wakanda while the rest of the Earth-bound heroes struggle to fight off Thanos’ minions in Avengers: Infinity War. Thor is dubbed one of MCU’s Big Three, alongside Iron Man and Captain America, making this ranking potentially controversial. However, his impact on the overall MCU isn’t remotely close to what they’ve had. The God of Thunder doesn’t really have any unique contribution to the actual Avengers aside from being strong.
Thor’s supposed search for the Infinity Stones after Avengers: Age of Ultron ends up being fruitless. He goes on his way to get Stormbreaker instead of touching base with his fellow Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War and then fails to kill Thanos. The MCU could have still explored space via the Guardians of the Galaxy, which better establishes the cosmos anyway. His biggest impact on the franchise is through his ties to Loki. Since much of his personal arcs are separated, his individual narratives have barely any bearing on what’s happening to the wider universe.
4 Black Widow
Despite not having any superpowers like many of her fellow MCU founding heroes, Natasha Romanoff provides so much more to the franchise than her actual combating skills. Similar to Hawkeye, Black Widow relies on her spy and stealth capabilities on the ground, but she has also functioned as the glue that keeps the team together on the few times that team was on the verge of going down a dangerous path. Aside from sacrificing herself in Vormir in exchange for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame, Nat is also the one who made sure that re-assembling the surviving heroes possible by manning the team’s control years for five years.
3 Hulk
Alongside Thor, Hulk is the most powerful hero in the original Avengers roster. What differentiates him from the God of Thunder, however, is that he has been useful in other aspects of the MCU. Without him rushing to Tony’s rescue after Iron Man lost control at the end of the Battle of New York, the sarcastic Avenger may have died early in the franchise. As Bruce Banner, he is integral in creating Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Finally, and perhaps more importantly, he successfully reverses the snap in Avengers: Endgame. Smart Hulk is likely the only hero physically and mentally equipped to do it without dying.
2 Captain America
Steve Rogers is the moral center of the Avengers. While not as strong as Thor or smart as Iron Man and Bruce Banner, he is what kept the team grounded and focused on their mission all throughout his time in the MCU. Aside from delivering great speeches — something that even Rocket Raccoon was impressed by in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America leads by example. Despite some lapses in his decision, including how he handled the knowledge about Bucky Barnes killing Tony’s parents while he was still operating as the Winter Soldier, Steve’s actions have always been motivated by good intentions.
Captain America’s strong moral values resulted in clashes with his Avengers co-leader Iron Man. However, that’s what makes him key into Tony as a character and a hero. Since they come from opposite ends of the spectrum in many things, coming together means that they are able to balance each other out. Beyond the inner dynamic of the Avengers, Steve functions as the quintessential hero — the ideal that everyone aspires to be.
1 Iron Man
As its inaugural hero, the MCU wouldn’t exist had it not been for Iron Man. His importance to Marvel Studios reflects on his role in the Avengers and the in-narrative franchise. Stark’s ingenuity and genius have paved the way for so many opportunities in the franchise. Despite his brash nature and tendency to overthink, there’s never a doubt that he is committed to the responsibility of protecting Earth as his way of making up for all his transgressions in the past. He has been generous with his resources, especially to his fellow Avengers. On the heels of SHIELD’s fall, he took it upon himself to fund the Avengers Initiative.
Stark has some great moments in the MCU. Arguably his most iconic one is Iron Man’s snap in Avengers: Endgame that ends Thanos’ threat in the Sacred Timeline. However, his biggest sacrifice isn’t even that, it’s his decision to join the time heist knowing full well of the risks that he is taking. It highlights just how much he has changed over the years — from a self-centered, war-profiteering industrialist to Avengers‘ most important hero.
