Dave Bautista seems to be leaving Marvel Studios to play a part in an upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film, which could be the best move for the actor.
Dave Bautista is leaving Marvel Studios to take part in M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming Knock at the Cabin and focus on new roles, which could be the best thing for the Drax the Destroyer actor. Bautista has portrayed the Kylosian warrior in the MCU since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy but has been vocal about his intent to leave the Marvel Studios’ franchise after the 2023 release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While this is sad news for Drax fans, and will surely change the shape of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Bautista has created the opportunity to really test his acting chops.
Knock at the Cabin, an adaptation of the 2018 horror novel Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, has been in development since the book’s release. M. Night Shyamalan is attached as director. The film will feature a cast including Bautista, along with Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Glee’s Jonathan Groff, and Nikki Amuka-Bird, who previously starred in Shyamalan’s Old. Knock at the Cabin has been given an R-rating, and so is a clear divergence from Bautista’s usual family-friendly MCU films, suggesting audiences might see a very different performance from the actor.
Knock At The Cabin’s R-Rating Makes Bautista’s MCU Split Easier
The news of Bautista leaving Marvel Studios doesn’t come as a surprise since he has spoken already about how he feels Drax’s story has come full circle. Marvel Studios projects are notorious for their family-friendly tone, despite often dealing with heavy themes. The light-heartedness, particularly of Bautista’s character as Drax, has associated the actor with more PG roles. Transitioning from the MCU to an R-rated flick like Knock at the Cabin can introduce audiences to a new Bautista, and it is his chance to spread out into darker and more intense roles. Despite the R-rating and a potentially new direction for Bautista, many will want to see him infuse his Knock at the Cabin performance with that comedic charm that makes the MCU’s Drax the Destroyer so lovable.

This will be a loss for the MCU, but director James Gunn has confirmed that the shape of the Guardians will change significantly in their third solo outing, and it seems that Drax could be a casualty of the film.
Not only will this allow new characters to take their place on the Guardians team, but it will also allow Bautista to properly showcase his acting range outside the sometimes rigid Marvel hero formula. Bautista performs his comedic moments in the MCU perfectly, but there is a lot of untapped potential in the actor that audiences haven’t yet seen. Knock at the Cabin will introduce audiences to a very different Bautista, with the opportunity to fully let loose in an R-rated horror movie.
