In a new tweet shared by the official Doctor Who Twitter account, Varma was confirmed to be the latest star to join season 14’s incredible cast. The actress who previously portrayed Dornish leader Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones and Imperial defector Tala Durith in Obi-Wan Kenobi will portray a mysterious new character known as the Duchess, a character first referred to in a tweet showcasing Gatwa and Gibson’s Regency-era Doctor Who costumes. Both Varma and returning showrunner Russell T Davies released statements as part of the official announcement, with Varma emphasizing her excitement at working alongside Gatwa, with both the star and Davies celebrating her surprising return to the Doctor Who universe.

Indira Varma: “I’m thrilled to be in Doctor Who and particularly excited to be crossing cosmic paths with Ncuti, as the Doctor, and look forward to creating interplanetary mischief with him. I loved playing Suzie Costello for Russell T Davies in Torchwood so am thrilled to be entering this world again.”

Russell T Davies: “I’m overjoyed to be reunited with Indira after our Torchwood days, and this part is truly spectacular! A whole new audience will be hiding behind the settee when the Duchess unleashes her terror.”

Indira Varma Is The Latest Torchwood Star To Cross Over Into Doctor Who

Doctor Who season 14 will mark Varma’s transition from the adult-oriented spin-off Torchwood. Despite being a high-ranking member of the team, Suzie’s fear of death led to her becoming obsessed with the alien artifact known as the Resurrection Gauntlet, committing a series of murders while laying down a scheme to escape her own demise. While Suzie was shot when confronting Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), her plan would see her briefly revived to put a stop to her plot, before being killed yet again.

Varma isn’t the only Torchwood cast member to play another role within the main Doctor Who series. Prior to her appearance in Torchwood, Myles portrayed Victorian servant girl Gwyneth in the season 1 episode “The Unquiet Dead“, who would later be established as an ancestor of Gwen Cooper in the season 4 finale “Journey’s End“. Peter Capaldi would also join Torchwood following his guest role as marble merchant Caecilius in Doctor Who season 4’s “The Fires of Pompeii” as the tragic Home Office secretary John Frobisher during Torchwood‘s harrowing season 3 story “Children of Earth”, only to return and lead the main series as the Twelfth Doctor from 2014 to 2017.

With Varma having starred in both Game of Thrones and Obi-Wan Kenobi, her surprising return to Doctor Who will excite both new and longtime viewers. Alongside joining Doctor Who season 14’s all-star cast, many familiar with her previous Doctor Who roles will also be intrigued by how her mysterious Duchess character will differ from her portrayal of Suzie Costello. And with Varma returning to Doctor Who, other familiar faces may return in new roles.
