Linda Blair’s The Exorcist: Believer Cameo Explained

Blair’s cameo sparked a strong reaction because the franchise originated with her. In The Exorcist, she portrayed the original possessed girl Regan MacNeil, contributing much to what is considered one of the scariest horror movies of all time. While Blair returned for the first sequel, Exorcist II: The Heretic, she hasn’t reprised the role of Regan since 1977. Hence, appearing in The Exorcist: Believer as Regan after 46 years is quite impressive.

Before the movie’s release, it was revealed that Blair had been on the set of The Exorcist: Believer, but only to serve as an advisor. Director David Gordon Greene explained they wanted her advice to make filming safer for the young actors on set. Though her presence on set sparked rumors of a cameo, the crew did a fairly good job keeping it under wraps. To add to the surprise, the cameo doesn’t occur until The Exorcist: Believer‘s ending. It’s also revealed that Regan wasn’t in contact with Chris to explain her absence.

At the very end, though, Regan surprises her mother by showing up at the hospital where Chris is recovering from injuries sustained during the exorcisms. When she hears the door to her room open, she expects it to be Victor (Leslie Odom Jr.), the father of one of the girls. Instead, it’s Regan, and viewers very briefly see the mother and daughter together in an emotional reunion. Even though The Exorcist: Believer may not have done everything right, it did deliver the decades-long reunion between Regan and Chris.
