Summary

  • Damon’s reduced role in All American: Homecoming season 3 has been clarified by the show’s creator. He will be recurring instead of a series regular.
  • Creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll reassures fans that Damon’s impact at the school will continue, and the essence of the Homecoming story remains the same.
  • Other cast members will also have reduced roles, but the pursuit of dreams and the ensemble nature of the show will remain unchanged.

All American: Homecoming season 3’s reduced role for Damon has been clarified by the show’s creator. Damon, played by Peyton Alex Smith, is one of the main characters of the college-set All American spinoff, forming a major part of the love triangle at the center of the show, vying with Martin Bobb-Semple’s Lando for the affections of Simone Hicks (Geffri Maya). In fact, the season 2 finale implied that Simone had finally made a choice between the two men, but news broke earlier this year that Smith would have a reduced role in the upcoming season 3.

As part of TVLine‘s Inside Line question-and-answer feature, they reached out to creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll to discuss Damon’s role in All American: Homecoming season 3. Carroll was quick to remind readers that “Peyton isn’t off the show,” but rather being reduced from regular to recurring like several other cast members. Carroll insisted that “his impact at the school will continue.” Read Carroll’s full quote below:

Peyton isn’t off the show; he just won’t be a series regular, which is not just the case for him but other cast members as well. What I can say about that is that the character of Damon and his impact at the school will continue on. The essence of what is at the heart of the Homecoming story for both characters, both sports, the pursuit of a dream for this ensemble cast… all of that stays the same.

The All American: Homecoming Season 3 Changes Explained

As Carroll reiterates, the changes to Damon’s involvement in the story of the show stem from a larger change in the season itself. All of this has come about in the wake of The CW being put on the market and acquired by the media company Nexstar. The CW changing hands cemented in a huge swath of cancelations of shows including The Winchesters, Legacies, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Charmed, and many more, leaving behind only a handful of high-performing scripted shows, All American: Homecoming among them.

While All American: Homecoming survived this initial spate of cancelations, the budget for the season was nevertheless affected considerably. The new season is being impacted by this in several ways, including returning to a 13-episode season following an expanded 15-episode season 2. This also includes major shakeups in the All American: Homecoming cast, such as Smith’s reduced presence.

Along with Damon, Kelly Jenrette’s Amara has been reduced to recurring for season 3. Additionally, Cory Hardrict’s Marcus and Rhoyle Ivy King’s Nathaniel have become reduced regulars. It remains to be seen if All American: Homecoming maintains the same level of audience interest after these cuts, but longtime viewers can at least rest assured that these characters won’t be entirely absent from the season, even if it does feel considerably different from season 2.
