With the wait for the show’s return getting shorter, Prime Video has announced a special Invincible short movie exploring Atom Eve’s origin story. Voiced by Community alum Gillian Jacobs, Eve is a classmate of Steven Yeun’s Mark Grayson whom he learns is actually the superheroine on the Teen Team roster upon him gaining his own powers and joining the team before they both are enlisted in the new Guardians of the Globe. Eve initially acts as a love interest and close confidante to Mark as she forges her own path, quitting after her ex-boyfriend cheats with a teammate.

As part of the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Prime Video has released the trailer for a special Invincible short movie.

The video, as seen above, reveals that the now-released special episode will dive into Atom Eve’s origin story, including the scientific experiment that imbued her with matter-manipulating powers, and the difficult relationship with her mom in regard to her abilities. The trailer also shows a young Eve fighting a variety of foes under the tutelage of a homeless-looking character.

How The Invincible Special Episode Is Adapting Atom Eve’s Origins

Though teased in season 1, Atom Eve’s origin story was left largely under wraps, save for some issues with her father, who largely disowns her and says the worst day of his life is when she got her powers. Initially taken as a retcon of the character’s backstory from the comics, the trailer seen above seems to indicate that the show is getting back to Atom Eve’s source origin story, in which she was created specifically to be a government weapon.

One of the biggest indications that the Invincible short movie will be staying true to Atom Eve’s comics origin story is the mysterious figure seen overwatching the hero during her younger years. If staying true to the comics, this character would be that of Erias Brandyworth, Eve’s birth father who faked her death in order to keep her safe from the government, but kept an eye on her from afar and warned her against using her powers to avoid their detection. His brief appearances in the trailer seen above further point to him having a smaller role in the episode, much like Brandyworth in the Eve-focused comics.

The other major clue that the Invincible special episode is staying true to Atom Eve’s origin story is the return of Killcannon, the villain briefly seen in the season 1 premiere of the Prime Video show. In the comics, Killcannon is one of Eve’s first major villain battles, where she first donned a mask and came up with her superhero name. While the show has seen some deviations from its source material, the various teases of a return to closer adapting Kirkman’s comics is sure to come as a welcome path for fans of Invincible‘s pages.
