The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding its cosmic side with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and the movie may also help to establish a new powerful cosmic team: The Annihilators. After Warlock was teased in a post-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, the superhero will stand against the eponymous space-faring team when their third film hits theaters this May. However, Warlock’s MCU future may be much bigger than James Gunn and Marvel Studios are currently letting on. While the Guardians of the Galaxy may be coming to an end, Adam Warlock may be set up to lead the Annihilators.
After missing Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Adam Warlock must be done justice in the MCU, leaving one of his most recognizable storylines to be adapted for his upcoming appearance. In Marvel Comics, the Annihilators are a team of cosmically powered superheroes who band together to become the most powerful team in the universe. Composed primarily of space-based characters, the Annihilators devote themselves to maintaining peace in the galaxy, keeping various planets from going to war with one another and thereby preserving trillions of lives through their actions. With several new cosmic characters set to join the MCU in the coming years, an Annihilators lineup seems more possible than ever.
10 Adam Warlock
Adam Warlock is among the most powerful characters in the entire MCU, using his innate abilities to battle cosmic foes with ease. Although he is currently being set up as a villain in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, Adam will certainly have a change of heart by the film’s ending, much like his comic book counterpart, who also rebelled against his original programming to become a hero. If the Annihilators do come into existence, Adam is the natural hero to lead them. Not only will the character already be well-established by this point, but Will Poulter also possesses the talent necessary to lead a larger cast of superpowered characters.
9 Silver Surfer
The MCU is slowly setting up the Silver Surfer, the herald of Galactus, for his debut. The character is among one of the most highly anticipated heroes likely to appear before the end of the Multiverse Saga and, once introduced, will undoubtedly signify a new age of MCU heroes with a more cosmic power set. Though he typically fights alone, the Silver Surfer becomes one of the main members of the Annihilators in the comics, uniting his powers with the likes of Adam Warlock and Quasar to protect the universe from galactic war. With his MCU introduction imminent, the Annihilators may be the best team for the new Silver Surfer.
8 Quasar
The MCU’s Ms. Marvel overwrites some of Quasar’s early stories, especially with her bangle of mysterious origin, but Quasar is still worth introducing. He’s an extremely powerful Avenger from Marvel Comics who is also known as The Protector of the Universe. Gaining his power from ancient Quantum Bands, Quasar is one of the strongest characters in the history of Marvel and, therefore, a premiere member of the Annihilators. While Quasar has not yet been introduced in the MCU, his live-action debut appears imminent, especially as the franchise’s characters continue to level up on the power scale as they face greater cosmic enemies like Kang the Conqueror and Arishem.
7 Sentry
Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie may include Sentry as its villain, hinting at a massive threat currently awaiting the MCU’s newest team of antiheroes. Sentry, also known as Bob Reynolds, is a complicated superhero with immense power who has been an active Avenger for years, despite the world’s memories of him being erased by the Illuminati. While capable of great heroics, Sentry suffers from an identity crisis, sometimes causing him to become the Void, a villainous counterpart bent on causing destruction. Too dangerous to be left on Earth, the MCU’s Sentry may be better suited to exploring the galaxy with the Annihilators, though the Void’s interference may cause more harm than good.
6 Nova
Rumors contend that Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 introduces Nova to the MCU, perhaps setting him up for his very own solo movie or Disney+ Special Presentation. Nova is a mantle maintained by several characters throughout Marvel Comics’ history, with the most notable of these being Richard Rider. Nova is long overdue for his MCU introduction, which will likely come before Avengers: Secret Wars and the end of the Multiverse Saga. When he finally does arrive, the space-based member of the Nova Corps would have a better future in the franchise if he embarks on the cosmic missions of the Annihilators instead of the Earth-based endeavors of the Avengers.
5 Thor
Although the end of Thor’s MCU arc appears to be on the not-too-distant horizon, the Norse god of thunder may still have some story left to tell before he takes his final bow. Though Thor is not a member of the Annihilators in the comics, he certainly fits the requirements to become a part of their ranks. As one of the most powerful Avengers in the franchise who specializes in space-based missions, Thor is a likely candidate to serve as a member of the MCU’s Annihilators. However, given Chris Hemsworth’s indications that he would like to wrap up MCU tenure soon, Thor’s time on the Annihilators would likely be limited.
4 Beta Ray Bill
Although various Marvel films have set up Beta Ray Bill’s introduction to the MCU, the beloved Korbinite has yet to make his live-action debut. The companion of Thor, who also happens to be the typical wielder of Stormbreaker, is a stout-hearted warrior who has vowed to defend the innocent, leading him to become an integral part of the Annihilators in their comic book iteration. As the MCU continues to set up various teams like the Marvels and Fantastic Four for its immediate future, the best chance of seeing Beta Ray Bill finally join the franchise is if he becomes one of the newest members of Adam Warlock’s burgeoning team.
3 Cosmo
Borat 2 actress Maria Bakalova voices Cosmo the Space Dog in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the upcoming third film in the franchise. Cosmo is a dog that was launched into space by the Soviet Union during the Space Race, somehow acquiring telepathic powers during her subsequent extraterrestrial adventures. In the comics, it is actually Cosmo who unites the Annihilators, using the severed Celestial head Knowhere as their base of operations. Given Cosmo’s recent reintroduction to the MCU and the Guardians’ purchase of Knowhere, the franchise certainly seems to be setting up the Annihilators’ comic book origin story for Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.
2 Ikaris
Although Richard Madden’s Ikaris flies into the sun in Eternals’ finale, the character may have a future in the MCU. Characters rarely remain dead in superhero media, and considering Ikaris was an artificial construct, the Eternal could be brought back for more adventures. If he does return, Ikaris would have no place on Earth or with his former companions after his actions during the Emergence, signaling that he would instead spend his time in other corners of the galaxy. The powerful Eternal could find himself as a member of the Annihilators, a team that has a history of recruiting former supervillains, using this team as a method of redeeming himself.
1 Captain Marvel
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will team up with Ms. Marvel and Photon in the upcoming Phase 5 film The Marvels. While this team may occupy much of Carol’s time in the future, its cosmic adventures in space already resemble those of the Annihilators. If the Marvels only proves to be a temporary arrangement, Carol would fit in perfectly as a member of Adam Warlock’s new team. Captain Marvel’s powers rival those of any other cosmic superhero in the MCU, making her a likely candidate for recruitment. Since The Marvels is the first MCU film to follow Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, she may even find herself recruited to The Annihilators soon.
