Last year, James Gunn was appointed as co-head of DC Studios. This has made a lot of Snyder zealots very angry, and has been widely regarded among their ranks as a bad move.

For the rest of us comic book movie fans, however, a sweeter deal couldn’t have been struck; when it comes to capes, Gunn simply doesn’t miss, and we struggle to think of a creative mind more suited to pen the rebooted DC Universe.

And with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 flying high with audiences, the new DC boss has given the world yet another reason not to bet against him, and while haters are – as the word suggests – gonna hate, a healthy slew of folks over at r/DC_Cinematic remain adamant that the numbers don’t lie, and have pointed to Gunn’s spotless comic book movie track record as proof that DC fans have very little to worry about.

Indeed, having masterminded the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and its holiday special, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker, Gunn has proven time and time again that he knows how to handle comic book worlds in a way that’s not only impossibly fun, but nuanced and tonally flexible as well.

It’s his ability to handle individual characters that make his helming of Superman: Legacy all the more exciting; if we can have fun rooting for a self-loathing nationalist like Peacemaker, we can only imagine how we’re going to feel about Gunn’s take on the comic book paragon of justice.

It would do most skeptics good to remember why Gunn was hired in the first place; when it comes to resumes, the Guardians boss is borderline untouchable, and we’re more than ready to eat whatever he ends up cooking.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters. Superman: Legacy is due to release on July 11, 2025.
