With She-Hulk: Attorney at Law the talk of the town, viewers have begun comparing the property to other Marvel films and even shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This isn’t the first time a Marvel property has received such a comparison.
Back in 2012, fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer took to the internet to comment on the similarities between the Scoobies and the Avengers due to Joss Whedon’s involvement in both projects. While the controversial auteur quit working with Marvel after Avengers: Age of Ultron was released in 2015, the MCU’s characters still have much in common with Buffy the Vampire Slayer thanks to the contributions of writers such as Drew Goddard, Steven S. DeKnight, and Doug Petrie.
10 She-Hulk & Buffy
At first blush, the two characters might not be the most obvious pairing, but a quick look at their abilities and personality suggests otherwise. Both are incredibly powerful women, sex-positive individuals, and on the outside of their social groups.
The most important aspect of the two respective characters is that they didn’t choose to gain their powers and strive to lead normal lives. In the case of Buffy, this means being an ordinary teenage girl while Jennifer Walters simply desires to be a lawyer.
9 Ant-Man & Xander
As the funniest characters in their respective franchises, it makes sense that Ant-Man and Xander are the perfect match for one another. They lack powers and are often talked down to because of their lighthearted nature and tendency to say stupid things, yet are loyal and dependable (perhaps because of their adoration for their peers).
Much of what makes Ant-Man and Xander so likable is their want to be involved in a world larger than their own. They might not totally fit in with the rest of their friends, but they’re still heroes who are willing to throw themselves in harm’s way to protect their loved ones.
8 Kate Bishop & Dawn
As young people who grew up surrounded by heroes, Kate Bishop and Dawn Summers understandably want to get in on the action. They’re given the chance to by their mentors, yet despite the training they receive, they are viewed as inexperienced and ill-prepared for the world they wish to enter.
The troubled relationships don’t just stem from the mentor. Kate and Dawn also show disrespect for their mentors due to the treatment they receive. The results can be cathartic, but deep down, Kate still gets along with Clint, and Dawn chooses to love her sister.
7 U.S. Agent & Riley
At first glance, it would seem that Captain America and Riley are the more obvious match. After all, they’re both no-nonsense boy scouts who leave the military organizations they work for upon learning of their corruption.
While Cap and Riley might start from a place of honor and respectability, the latter’s turn toward jealousy and morality more closely matches John Walker’s descent into extremism. The two characters break under the pressure of living up to their idol and become disgraced figures as a result.
6 Mantis & Anya
Two of the funniest characters in their series, Mantis and Anya start out from curiously similar places before becoming part of a found family. When the two women are first introduced to audiences, they start out on the side of evil, though Mantis is clearly the nobler of the two given that she turns on Ego.
As a member of their respective teams, Mantis and Anya serve as the arbiters of awkward comedy due to their lack of human understanding. This is most apparent in how blunt they are when talking to others, especially because they don’t intend for their words to come across as harmful.
5 Hulk & Oz
Bruce Banner and Daniel “Oz” Osbourne both possess great intellectual abilities and present themselves as friendly people, yet underneath their calm demeanor lurks darkness. In a literal sense, these smart Whedon characters transform into mindless monsters.
While Oz’s transformations into a werewolf are largely the result of the full moon rather than internal demons, the wolf still represents the rage and aggression that is in him (like the Hulk is for Bruce). As a result of the destructive beasts that rest inside, both characters have attempted to control their inner monsters to mixed results.
4 Scarlet Witch & Willow
Scarlet Witch & Willow are dealt some of the heaviest hands in their respective franchises. They start out as innocent magic users who are treated to loss early on in their adventures, before eventually going off the deep end when their loved ones are murdered in front of them.
Even after the two characters are brought to the dark side through their use of magic, Wanda and Willow still go through redemptive arcs. Wanda’s might not have fully played out due to her self-sacrifice at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but both women show how powerful they are by overcoming the darkness that overtook them.
3 Winter Soldier & Angel
Introduced as bastions of good in Captain America: The First Avenger and Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 1, these two characters are eventually brought to the dark side against their own volition. In the case of Bucky, it’s through brainwashing and for Angel, it comes at the loss of his soul.
Beyond the two serving as reluctant foes for their series’ protagonists, Bucky and Angel also end up dying and being brought back to life and moving on to their own TV shows. It’s as the lead character on their respective shows that the two characters show their true, heroic colors and work to atone for their previous crimes.
2 Loki & Spike
As ageless bad boys grappling with jealousy issues, it makes sense that Loki and Spike are the best characters in their respective franchises. Of course, there’s more to these two characters than their charisma.
Loki and Spike both start as serious threats to their enemies before being neutered down the line and becoming a reluctant allies for their blonde protagonist. What’s more, both end up dying and being brought back to life (Loki in a less literal fashion) wherein their redemptive arc can be played out with new characters.
1 Iron Man & Cordelia
On the surface, it would seem these two characters have nothing in common. One’s a snarky pop culture icon while the other is a self-centered teenager. Look at both characters’ journeys, however, and it becomes abundantly clear how similar they are.
Both started out as self-centered narcissists who couldn’t see outside their personal bubbles before each was given an epiphany and went on the road of redemption. For Tony, this came in the form of discovering his weapons were being used by terrorists while Cordelia changed when she began receiving visions of the helpless. To top it all off, they both sacrificed themselves to save the world and inspired others to follow in their footsteps.
