Good Omens co-author Neil Gaiman reveals just how much time has passed between seasons 1 and 2, confirming a major time jump ahead of the new episodes’ release. The Prime Video series is based on Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel of the same name that chronicles the unique relationship between an angel and demon, and their attempts to avert the end times. Michael Sheen stars as the book-loving angel Aziraphale, while David Tennant takes on the role of the chaos-instigating demon Crowley.

While fans are still excited by Good Omens season 2’s trailer, many were also left with questions for what the new season holds, with Gaiman responding to one such inquiry through his personal Tumblr account. When asked just how much time has passed for Aziraphale and Crowley, the author has confirmed that a few years have passed before Jon Hamm’s Archangel Gabriel turned up on Crowley’s doorstep at the start of season 2. Check out Gaiman’s explanation below:

It takes place a few years after the end of Season 1. It feels like it’s probably in more or less real time, which would mean it’s four years on.

What Does Season 2’s Time Jump Means For Good Omens?

While Crowley and Aziraphale thwarted the plans of Heaven and Hell to bring about a cataclysmic war, the duo only just managed to escape both sides’ vengeance through a clever ploy where they impersonated one another. When they were each brought into custody by their respective factions, neither was destroyed by the punishments Heaven and Hell prepared due to them switching places, leaving them to wander the Earth. The Good Omens season 2 trailer has suggested that Heaven and Hell have kept their eyes on Aziraphale and Crowley, but have not taken further action against the pair, leaving them to dine and thrive in peace.

Furthermore, the confirmed cast for Good Omens season 2 can offer hints at what has happened between seasons. While Miranda Richardson will return to the series as the new demon character Shax, she will not reprise the role of medium Madame Tracy, and Adria Arjona, Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, and Sam Taylor Buck are confirmed to not be returning for the new episodes. As such, it is clear that the characters involved in the Tadfield incident have gone on to live ordinary lives, with Buck’s Adam in particular presumably having no more role in the forces of hell, despite his Anti-Christ origins.

With Good Omens season 2 taking place a handful of years since season 1’s climax, many fans of the show may wonder just what Aziraphale and Crowley may have done since they were last seen. While it may have been a time free of celestial occurrences, those drawn to the duo’s dynamic may wonder if they remained in contact between seasons.

Good Omens season 2 arrives on July 28 on Prime Video.
