Rick and Morty season 5 has been faced with criticism from those who believe the show made Rick weaker and more fallible, but the Rick and Morty season 6 premiere has fixed that. Season 6 seems to be focusing on more canonical stories, expanding on Rick’s tragic backstory and his battle with Weird Rick that has been developed throughout seasons 5 and 6. While this criticism was understandable, Rick and Morty season 6 is finally paying off this major Rick change.
Rick and Morty season 6, episode 1, “Solaricks” picks up right where the season 5 finale left off. Rick and Morty are still stranded on a broken section of the Citadel of Ricks after Evil Morty destroyed the Citadel and broke the Central Finite Curve, disabling all portal guns throughout the multiverse. Although it seems like the duo may not make it, Space Beth shows up at the last second and saves Rick and Morty from certain death. After getting back to Earth, Rick theorizes that he can repair the portal guns by resetting the portal fluid, but in the process, he accidentally resets all portal travelers instead. As a result, every interdimensional traveler (including Rick, Morty, Jerry, and the hundreds of dead Ricks from the Citadel) are sent back to their home dimensions, kicking off a struggle to return to dimension C-131.
After the reset, Rick is sent back to his home dimension where Weird Rick killed his wife Diane and daughter Beth. In a twist, it is revealed that the show’s main Rick isn’t actually from C-137, and that Rick changed universes and has been lying about where he is from. As it turns out, Weird Rick is from C-137, and the main Rick has relocated to C-137 in order to live with that family while hunting down Weird Rick in the process. This twist reframes the entire show, highlighting that Rick has spent the entire series seeking revenge on Weird Rick, lying about who he is to those who love him. Throughout season 5, more of this backstory is revealed as Rick gets more obsessed with finding Weird Rick. Because of this, Rick’s irrationality in season 5 makes sense. Although he was seemingly invincible in earlier seasons, recently Rick has been more focused on getting revenge, causing him to ignore other things and make mistakes. Rick’s attitude in season 5 can be explained by the overarching Weird Rick story that will take place in Rick and Morty season 6, with each season making the other one better.
Why Season 5 Makes The Season 6 Opening Better
Season 5 of Rick and Morty makes season 6 better as well, as the way they tie into each other allows for Rick to be more emotional, more motivated, and more realistic. Not only is Rick’s drive for revenge hurting his ability to succeed, but Evil Morty’s destruction of the Central Finite Curve in season 5 has opened up dimensions where Rick isn’t the smartest person alive. Rick is becoming more fallible internally and externally, and the Weird Rick storylines and Evil Morty storylines will probably cross over in a way that highlights this even more.
Under all the weird sci-fi and meta jokes, Rick and Morty has a lot of emotion to offer, and Rick’s worsening state and tragic backstory is the perfect example of this. Rick and Morty season 6’s canon episodes seem to be a bigger focus now, meaning that there is probably a lot more of Weird Rick to be seen. While season 5 may have raised some questions for audiences, Rick and Morty season 6 seems set to answer them.
