The story of “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” opened where Rick and Morty season 6’s finale stinger left off, as the show revealed that Mr. Poopybutthole was crashing at the Smith house until he got back on his feet. Rick’s friend had long outstayed his welcome, resulting in Rick bringing together Squanchy, Birdperson, Gearhead, and Gene for an intervention that soon fell apart. This turned into the madcap reunion that Rick and Morty season 7’s trailer revealed, but it was Gene’s unaccompanied lawnmower that proved pivotal to the episode’s hilarious stinger. When the group got together, they realized they needed at least one sober member.
Thus, Gene was drafted in as a last-minute addition to Mr. Poopybutthole’s intervention before it devolved into a disastrous night of debauchery. Gene left his lawnmower running as he was swept off and the episode’s stinger revealed that the appliance had destroyed much of his hometown and killed numerous people as it drove on.
