The new promo poster for Shadow & Bone hints at the amplifier that will be at the heart of season 3 before season 2 is even released.
The promos for Shadow and Bone season 2 have given only slight hints at what exactly the series has in store, but its newest poster is already setting up the main goal of season 3. When the story left off, Alina had escaped the clutches of the Darkling, fleeing Ravka with Mal. Though she reclaimed the amplifier forced on her by the Darkling, the danger is far from over. Unbeknownst to her, the Darkling survived being left in the Shadow Fold, and is more determined than ever to use her power.
The new poster that debuted on social media depicts the 3 main characters of the Shadow and Bone side of the story (the Six of Crows characters will have their own separate adventure this season). In the poster, the Darkling, Alina, and Mal are each flanked by symbols representing Morozova’s amplifiers: the Stag, the Sea Whip, and the Firebird. Like the series, the first book focuses on the Stag, with the second and third installments centering around the hunt for the Sea Whip and Firebird respectively. If the series continues to follow the pacing of the books, audiences can expect season 3 to focus on the Firebird.
Shadow & Bone’s 3 Amplifiers Explained
Almost all Grisha use amplifiers of some sort, but the three amplifiers showcased in the newest Shadow and Bone poster are considered legends to the characters in that world. They are the prize creations of Ilya Morozova, a long-dead and immensely talented Fabrikator who pushed the limits of Grisha capabilities. Nicknamed the Bonesmith for his use of his own finger bones in the creation of his amplifiers, Morozova was one of the most powerful Grisha in history. His amplifiers would make any Grisha’s power nearly unstoppable, which is why the Darkling has made it his mission to hunt them down, disregarding the fact that they have never been seen.
When Alina first enters the story, her powers are unrefined and, according to the Darkling, needs the amplifiers in order to destroy the Shadow Fold and, in turn, save all of Ravka. Not just any amplifier would do; her power required the strength of Morozova’s legendary creations. Under this pretense, hunting parties aided by Mal’s incredible tracking abilities are sent out to find the Stag. Once General Kirigan’s- the Darkling’s- true villainous nature is revealed, Mal and Alina set out to track the rest of them down before he can get to them.

How The Shadow & Bone Season 2 Poster Sets Up Season 3’s McGuffin
The race to collect all three amplifiers continues throughout the rest of the series. Until Alina’s Sun-Summoning powers and Mal’s tracker skills came into play, the Darkling had never had any luck finding the amplifiers. Though the Sea Whip is found soon enough, it’s the Firebird that proves to be the hardest amplifier to track down. The hunt for the Firebird is soon exposed as a wild goose chase when it’s revealed that while the Firebird intended to be Morozova’s third amplifier does indeed exist, the amplifier itself is actually a person.
Passed down through Morozova’s own bloodline, the role as the third amplifier actually falls to Mal himself, whose tracker abilities are explained as a symptom of his incredible heritage. Fans of the book series will notice that the poster frames each character with the amplifier that represents the book that best highlighted their power: the Darkling in the Stag’s horns, Alina in the Sea Whip’s tail, and Mal in the wings of the Firebird. As the “Firebird” himself, this is a considerably big hint at what will happen in season 3, but is vague enough to avoid being a full spoiler.
However Shadow & Bone season 3 might continue the story, it’s likely that it will follow the pattern of the books. This means a focus on amplifiers, ending with the realization that Mal is more than he seems. The long hunt for the other amplifiers will only make the Firebird’s reveal more dramatic, which is perfect for the adventure-fantasy genre of the story.
