The MCU Is Making Captain Marvel’s Missing 23 Years Even More Confusing – Armessa Movie News

Brie Larson’s return to the MCU in The Marvels needs to explain one missing story that has been made even more confusing. Marvel Studios’ Phase 5 is set to continue the story that started in 2019’s Captain Marvel, with Secret Invasion on Disney+ delving into the lives of Skrulls living on Earth and 2023’s The Marvels catching up with Larson’s Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel. Despite being one of the most powerful characters in the MCU, Captain Marvel hasn’t yet seen a lot of development, and there are huge pieces of her story that haven’t been explored, including exactly what she was doing during her thirty-year break from Earth.

In a divergence from Marvel Comics, Captain Marvel revealed the MCU’s Skrulls to be a peaceful race, despite being initially antagonized due to their participation in the Kree-Skrull War. When the truth was brought to light, Danvers apparently set out across the stars to find a new home for the Skrull refugees living on Earth, but Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion will reveal that she hasn’t fulfilled this mission. Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, dealing with the consequences of Captain Marvel’s broken promise to the Skrulls, while this realization uncovers more burning questions about Carol Danvers’ own MCU story.

Captain Marvel Didn’t Keep Her Skrulls Promise – So What Was She Doing?!

With Secret Invasion set to release on June 21, 2023, story details about the upcoming Disney+ series are becoming clearer. Since Nick Fury will be dealing with a Skrull rebellion on Earth, it’s clear that Carol Danvers failed to live up to her word. The end of 2019’s Captain Marvel made it seem as though Danvers was leaving Earth with this one goal in mind, so it’s curious why she hasn’t been able to complete this mission. It could be assumed that Danvers didn’t return to Earth until the events of Avengers: Endgame some thirty years later, so it’s unclear what exactly she was doing during this time.

During Avengers: Endgame, Danvers claims she spent so much time away from Earth as there were plenty of other planets that needed assistance but didn’t have teams like the Avengers to protect them. This suggests that, in lieu of finding the Skrulls a new place to live, Captain Marvel was simply helping other planets and other species against unknown forces. It’s unclear why she expected the Skrulls to be able to wait patiently while she performed heroic acts across the universe, but Secret Invasion will see this action come back to haunt the inhabitants of Earth, so The Marvels has some serious explaining to do to redeem Captain Marvel.

The Marvels Needs To Properly Do Justice To Captain Marvel’s Missing MCU Story

The first official trailer for The Marvels revealed that the upcoming film will focus primarily on the team-up of Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. This might suggest that not much emphasis will be put on explaining Danvers’ actions in the space between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, though with Secret Invasion’s revelation that she hasn’t lived up to her promise, The Marvels needs to explain at least some of what she was doing during her absence. Captain Marvel may have failed the Skrulls in the MCU, but The Marvels could at least help to answer exactly why.
