The Walking Dead‘s Jeffrey Dean Morgan reveals the one big issue he had with Negan’s final story arc in season 11 and promises answers in Dead City. Although Morgan didn’t join the cast of The Walking Dead full-time until season 7, he still became one of the most iconic and beloved characters of the series. While he’s initially a violent totalitarian dictator of a group of survivors, he undergoes a gradual transformation that paints his transgressions in a new light. However, there’s one aspect of Negan’s storyline that didn’t sit right with Morgan.
While appearing on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast (via EW), Morgan revealed that he was bothered by Negan’s marriage in The Walking Dead season 11. Previously, the series delved into Negan’s past with his late wife Lucille (Hilarie Burton). She clearly played a big role in Negan’s motivations and actions, as he even named his beloved bat Lucille. Hence, Morgan was disappointed when the next season suddenly revealed he had remarried without properly building up to him taking this step. Check out his statement below:
“You know, I don’t know that he would’ve gotten married again, and they had Negan get married at the end of The Walking Dead. We never saw the story of how he met this person and why he would’ve married her, which always kind of bummed me out, because I think he was so in love with his wife, Lucille, and it had made such a production out of the whole Lucille of it all. Having him show up with a wife without telling the story of why and how was always, like, a problem — an issue I had. But, you know, that’s what happens when you’re doing a show with 30 main characters. You’re not able to service each character as well as you may want to. And I think now with Dead City, we’ll get some answers.”
Negan’s Story Continues In The Walking Dead Spin-Off Dead City
As Morgan touched on, The Walking Dead season 11 wasn’t the end of Negan’s story. Dead City is one of the first Walking Dead spin-offs featuring returning characters to premiere after the original show’s conclusion. The series premiered on June 18 and sees Morgan reprise his role as Negan alongside Lauren Cohan’s Maggie. Dead City sees Negan and Maggie form a shaky alliance due to Maggie’s desperation to save her kidnapped son Hershel (Logan Kim).
It is expected that the series will delve further into Negan’s backstory and the sudden change in direction his story took in season 11. Maggie is a constant reminder of all the wrongs Negan has committed, considering he murdered her husband, Glenn. However, his new wife, Annie (Medina Senghore), does not appear in the first episode, nor does his child. In season 11, Negan’s wife was revealed to be expecting a baby. By the season finale and The Walking Dead: Dead City, the child should have been born, but they have not been mentioned or shown yet.
Instead, Negan is on the run after being accused of killing five people and shown nurturing an orphaned girl named Ginny (Mahina Napoleon). As a result, there has been confusion about where his family is in the series. While they haven’t turned up yet, Morgan’s hint of there being answers raises hopes that Dead City will still touch on this unfinished story arc. If viewers continue tuning into Dead City on AMC, they might be able to find a solution to the one lingering Negan problem from The Walking Dead.
