The White Lotus creator Mike White teases some potential casting and location ideas for season 3. HBO’s award-winning anthology series premiered back in July 2021 and followed the various exploits of a group of guests and employees at the titular resort chain. The White Lotus season 1, set in Hawaii, was praised for its writing and dark satirical nature, as well as the work of its ensemble cast, highlighted by Murray Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge. All the complexities that developed over the course of its six episodes resulted in a memorable finale, featuring intrinsic realizations and a surprising death, and with strong ratings throughout, the network announced the The White Lotus‘ renewal just days before the season ended.
The White Lotus returns to HBO on October 30, and despite tracking another group of tourists, audiences can expect season 2 to feel quite different. Back in August, executive producer David Bernard explained that the upcoming episodes will be specific to their new location, Sicily, and that viewers will be surprised by a lot of the events that unfold. Additionally, Aubrey Plaza, who joined the cast in January, teased that the change in scenery was beneficial to The White Lotus season 2’s story, stating that the characters and their individual stories are “more volcanic” this time around due to “the energy in Sicily.” Fans are excited to see the new cast, as well as Coolidge’s return, and with another installment already being discussed, many want to know where The White Lotus will go next.

“We just turned in our last episode to the network yesterday, so it’s hard to think about the next race. But if we did, I think it’d be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent. You know, we did Europe, and maybe Asia, something crazy like that, that would be fun… Jennifer is my friend and everybody loved her in the first season, and I was like, ‘I can’t go to Italy without Jennifer.’ And maybe that’s still the case. Like, maybe you can’t go to Japan without Jennifer, either. There are so many fun actors we’ve worked with so far, so it’s just kind of like who’s available.“
How The White Lotus Season 3 Could Be Completely Different
White’s previous comments about the potential story for The White Lotus season 3 indicate that the series could go in a completely different direction. Last month, he shared some initial plans for season 2, involving a story he likened to a Bilderberg Meeting, in which power dynamics would be explored, but revealed that it did not seem to fit the location of Sicily. If he decides to lean back into that concept, The White Lotus could introduce a slew of wealthy characters, as well as political figures, with real agendas outside of vacationing.
Viewers are eagerly awaiting The White Lotus season 2 premiere and with discussions already being brought up about the show’s future, it will be interesting to see what comes to fruition. Fans excited over the first look at Coolidge’s return in The White Lotus season 2, as well as the new resort, will likely enjoy seeing her character explore another property in Asia, or wherever White takes her.
